Cat Q&A

How do I get my cat to stop scratching my clothes drying rack?

Instructions to Stop a Cat from Scratching

Cats are known for scratching and unfortunately it may be your clothes drying rack that they have taken a liking to. To stop this behaviour it will take time, patience and some of the following steps:

Provide Alternate scratching material

Cats have a natural instinct to scratch. Therefore, providing plenty of scratching material such as cardboard boxes and scratching poles is your first step in redirecting their attention away from your drying rack.

Make the drying rack less appealing

Your cat may have developed a particular liking to the drying rack, so try to make it less appealing. This can be done by:

  • Covering it in foil or paper – This should make the surface uncomfortable for cats to scratch, as well as make it less inviting for them.
  • Sprinkling citrus – Cats do not like the smell of citrus, so sprinkling it on the rack should help stop them from wanting to scratch it.
  • Double sided tape – As cats do not like sticky surfaces, placing some double sided tape on the rack should also make it unappealing to them.

Providing entertainment for your cat

In addition to providing your cat with scratching material, it is also important to give them plenty of entertainment so that they can expend their energy elsewhere. This can include playing with toys, or providing a scratching pad for them to play on.

With time and patience you can prevent your cat from scratching your clothes drying rack. Providing them with alternative scratching materials, making the rack less attractive, and giving your cat plenty of entertainment are all ways to get your cat to stop scratching your clothes drying rack.
